Conference Dinner

Dinner will be served in the Kodak Gallery at the National Media Museum, set in the style of an elegant Edwardian panelled drawing room, delegates will experience a bygone era, surrounded by collections including the world’s first photographs.

The venue includes drinks at an exclusive viewing of the Games Lounge and an evening tour of Robbie Cooper's contemporary media themed exhibition entitled 'Immersion', the second part of which focuses on video games. Full details of these are included below.

National Media Museum's Games Lounge

The National Media Museum's Games Lounge is a brand new attraction giving visitors the chance to plug into the history of videogaming, play classic, groundbreaking games in their original arcade or console formats and discover the story behind a global phenomenon.

The Games Lounge is also the first public gallery that draws on the collection and knowledge of the National Videogame Archive (NVA). Featuring 15 individual games, several of the Games Lounge consoles are free to play, and others are coin-operated for the closest recreation of the original arcade experience possible

Anyone visiting the Museum will be able to play their way through the titles that helped videogaming become one of the most successful entertainment industries in the world; from the sensational Pong (1972) to releases from the 1990s such as Super Mario Kart and Golden Eye.

Robbie Cooper: Immersion

National Media Museum Gallery Two

Friday 12 March 2010 - Sunday 5 September 2010 (special late opening 25th March 2010)

The work of photographer and video artist Robbie Cooper explores the issues surrounding the increasing amount of exposure to contemporary media many people experience on a daily basis.

From children playing video games, to young adults absorbed in horror movies, to people living out second lives through online virtual worlds, this exhibition documents the many ways in which people choose to disengage from everyday life. Robbie Cooper's "Immersion" series documents the reactions and sensations of TV, video game and movie viewers "through-the-screen" as they interact with digital media. The portraits depict psychological and emotional responses to the media, in revealing video stills that combine a candid, voyeuristic intensity, with a highly produced finish.

The second part of the "Immersion" exhibition looks at the phenomenon of the avatar, the digital characters that gamers create, to interact with others online. Portraits of virtual world gamers from the United States, Europe, China, and Japan are paired with digital images of their Alter Egos, graphically dramatizing the gap between fantasy and reality.
