Storytelling with Pioneering AI Art

Outstanding, groundbreaking ‘text to art’ technologies were used to produce all the illustrations for this graphic novel by ambient artist 4T Thieves. Author, comic writer (2000 AD, Sonic the Comic) and games industry veteran Mark Eyles created the story and design.

1980s and 1990s comics

Mark wrote for 2000AD and Sonic the Comic (UK version of the comic) in the 1980s and 1990s. Mark worked on Sonic the Comic for its first two years. The strips he worked on were based on games, introducing new, original characters.

2000AD – Wire Heads

Asked to pitch a cyberpunk story to 2000 AD droid ‘Burt’ (editor Richard Burton) Mark created and scripted Wire Heads. Brilliant artwork by Mike Hadley.

Cyberpunk was still pretty new when this was written and ‘virtual reality’ was still largely just an aspiration outside research groups (though Sega had made an early attempt with the VR Boy). Some of the predicted technologies within this story are now accessible to anyone with a commercial VR headset.

Sonic the Comic – Zonerunner

A Blade Runner inspired Miles ‘Tails’ Prower takes on evil badniks in Zones from the Sonic the Hedgehog game. Mark created and scripted this version of Tails in two series: Zonerunner and the Flock & Zonerunner and the Big Freeze. Artwork by Rob Corona & Brian Williamson. Lettering Elitta Fell & Steve Potter.

2000AD – PARAsites: The Future King

A series set in the same world as Wire Heads. In 2130 virtual reality, the artificial island of Glastoncity, society in collapse, surgical implants, the agents known as ‘Mirrors’ combine in a King Arthur inspired comic series scripted by Mark and artworked by Mike Hadley.

A high fantasy tale based on the Sega game.

Based by Sega’s Wonder Boy games.

A three pager in which aliens twist time and kidnap some tourists.
